What We Are Listening To .....
By Kevin K

Philadelphia now has two major Sports Talk Radio stations, 610 WIP and 97.5 the Fanatic.

The battle of the ratings continues as the Fanatic has done a great job keeping up and even beating WIP in the ratings.

Battle of the Morning Shows

Angelo and the Morning (610) vs Mike & Mike (97.5 the Fanatic)

Kevin- WIP
Joe- WIP
Mike- 97.5

We at the Philly Phans enjoy staying live and local, which is the reason why Angelo and the Morning Team is the choice of three out of the four Phans. Angelo may be ridiculous at some points, but his co-hosts tend to make the show better. Rhea Hughes and Al Morganti make the morning show more entertaining and better to listen to. During Hockey season, Keith Jones brings his vast hockey knowledge and his comic relief to the program. And who could forget about the always entertaining Joe Conklin. Conklin brings comic relief to a show that tends to go over the edge sometimes with it's constant "hot women" talk.

Mike & Mike are a National Show that tends to take the National Perception of Philly Sports and their fans. Sometimes just listening to their perception drives us Philly Phans insane!

Battle of the Afternoon Shows

Anthony Gargano and Glen Macnow (WIP) vs Vai/Gonzo (10-12) and Tony Bruno/Harry Mayes (12-2) (97.5 the Fanatic)

Kevin- Both WIP and 97.5
Joe- Both WIP and 97.5
Mike- Both WIP and 97.5

Tony Bruno and Harry Mayes do a very entertaining job from 12-2 on 97.5 the Fanatic, but the show before theirs is lackluster and annoying. Gonzo is loud and annoying and should stick with writing for the Inquirer.

Gargano and Macnow are perfect with each other and bring out the best in each other. Whether it's their movie talk, (Macnow is notoriously known for his Movie Club for Men, which, I think, he should bring back) food talk, (Macnow and Gargano search for the best food), and obviously Sports Talk. The Coz and the Prof are a perfect combination where the Coz knows more about the 76ersm the Prof knows more of the Flyers. They are perfect Four for Four guys who consistently bring out the best in radio.

Battle of the Drive Time Shows

Howard Eskin and Ike Reese (WIP) vs Mike Missanelli (97.5 the Fanatic)

Kevin- 97.5
Joe- 97.5
Mike- 97.5

Since Mike Missanelli re-entered the Philly Sports talk scene, he has taken over the ratings from longtime self proclaimed "King of Sports Talk". The Mike Missanelli show brings a different feel to Sports Talk Radio. Missanelli gives his callers time to talk and respects their opinion, even when not respecting their opinion. The Mike MIssanelli show brings out Mike's old style of thinking with his Producer Jon Marks new aged feel of radio.

Ike Reese's appearance on the Howard Eskin show has changed Eskin's take on the radio.  Howard Eskin and Ike Reese make an unusual partnership with conflicting points of views that sometimes make the show listenable.

The Night Show Battle

Rob Ellis (WIP) vs Dan Schwartzman (97.5)

Kevin- WIP
Joe- Both
Mike- 97.5

Rob Ellis is the most patient and possibly knowledgeable man in Sports Talk Radio. Ellis states the facts and tells it as it is. Ellis won the Great Eagles Debate that WIP held a few months ago by backing up his point of view with stone cold facts. Rob Ellis is slowly becoming a beloved figure in Philly Sports Talk Radio.

Dan Schwartzman brings his own uniqueness to 97.5. He sometimes has outrageous points of views and works his best alone. Schwartzman was formerly on the afternoon show for 97.5 the Fanatic with Harry Mayes, however, Schwartzman seems to do his best by himself. Schwartzman tries to back up what he says with facts, but sometimes he goes over the edge when talking about certain topics.

Other Shows to Listen To:

Brian Startare on WIP: When Rob Ellis is off or on the Afternoon show also listen for Brian Startare for your Flyers news. B-Star does a great job covering the Flyers and has a very good hockey mind.

Tony Bruno on 97.5 the Fanatic: Bruno is on Philly radio twice a day, from 12-2 with Harry Mayes, and from 10 PM - 1 AM. Bruno has a Philly look on National Radio and uses that on his over night show.

Big Daddy Graham on WIP: Big Daddy is funny and brings out his full personality on his show on WIP. Also look for him to fill in for Angelo Cataldi every now and then on the Morning Show

Jon Marks on 97.5 the Fanatic: Jon Marks is Mike Missanelli's producer but also has his own show on 97.5 on Saturday Mornings. Alongside EJ or Phil, Marks is the brightest young mind on Philly Sports Radio.

Talking Baseball with Dutch on 97.5 the Fanatic: Darren Daulton returns to Philly talking the Philadelphia Phillies and his career. Dutch co-hosts alongside Jon Marks and Mike Missanelli and brings about the best pre-game talk show before the Phillies.

Ike Reese and Hugh Douglas on WIP: Ike and Hugh do a great job on Sunday afternoons and both have the Eagles Ego that continues to rise. The two friends work well together and put together a great show.

Dude, guys, come one, you are still giving the stiffs at that other station too much credit...97.5 is where it's at and you never need to touch the dial.

Wow Andrew, got to be honest with you, thanks for reading this far back. You are a true follower!

This post was written a year ago, now Eddie still is a big WIP guy, but most of us stay on the Fanatic. You also gave me an idea of doing this post again in a month or so when WIP spends time on 94.1.

Thanks Andrew, keep up! You are awesome

The wildlife and geologic formations of the island will be visible during the cruise tour, which will end back at Adventure Bay with a lunch and free time to explore before you board your plane to head towards Hobart. This combination tour provides an unmatched array of sights -- from the bird's eye view provided by a low-flying plane, to the up-close bay and coastal views of a tourist boat, to the feet-on-the-ground experience of being there. Thanks.
