WIP going FM
By Kevin K

The other day we posted a source saying that 610 WIP move to FM is "just a rumor, but looks like it's heading in that direction", Dan Gross of the Daily News reports it is happening. Gross, Philly.com's gossip writer, posted on Wednesday night that during the WIP Morning Show, Angelo Cataldi will announce 610 WIP's September 6th takeover of 94.1 WYSP and WIP's new lineup (after the departure of WIP great Howard Eskin) on Thursday morning's show.

Gross' report read:

While WIP will be celebrating the move to FM, which allows it to have a stronger signal and reach more, and especially younger, listeners, it will be a sad day at WYSP where staffers will learn they won't be working after Labor Day.

Staff at the rock station has been called to an 8:30 meeting Thursday morning.

When we reported about WIP's takeover of WYSP two weeks ago station management would not confirm nor deny our information.

The website 94WIP.com is already live and redirects to 610 WIP's site.

When hearing about the WIP switch to the FM, a 97.5 the Fanatic (WIP's direct competitor) Producer/host tweeted to the Philly Phans saying "Game On". He, as well as all of us, know that 97.5 has been ruling the airways lately because of their first major move to the FM station. They were the first FM station in Philly, and now WIP looks to compete with the Fanatic and their ratings.

UPDATE: The official name is now 94 WIP.

LINEUP:
  • 6 a.m. – 10 a.m.: Angelo Cataldi and the Morning Show
  • 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.: Michael Barkann and Ike Reese
  • 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.: Anthony Gargano and Glen Macnow
  • 6 p.m. – 10 p.m.: Rob Ellis
The changes will go into effect Tuesday, Sept. 6, the day after Labor Day.

King dethroned?
By Kevin K

The self proclaimed King of afternoon sports talk radio, Howard Eskin, is leaving the airwaves after 25 years on Sports Radio 610 W.I.P.. Eskin made the announcement on Monday on his radio show and his twitter page.

"After 25 year this month at WIP giving up daily show to pursue new challenges in business. However, signing new deal WIP for Eagles games & more"

Eskin, who has been dethroned by 97.5 the Fanatic's Mike Missanelli for the top sports talk show in Philly, was a legend in Philly sports talk radio for 25 years. Although he was hated by a lot of people, they continued to tune in to what he had to say on a daily basis.

Eskin leaves at a time of change in the Philadelphia Sports Talk world. Rumors continue to swirl that 610 W.I.P. will take over 94.1 WYSP's FM feed looking to compete more with their rival 97.5 the Fanatic.

My sources tell me that it is all rumor right now, but it looks like it is heading in that direction.

I would like to wish the best to Howard Eskin. I didn't really like you that much, I admit I am a 97.5 the Fanatic listener; however, I respect you greatly. Giving 25 years to this city and their teams is truly amazing. Best of luck Howard.
