Hall of Famer Robin Roberts Passes Away

Robin Roberts, arguably the best pitcher in Phillies history, died this morning at the age of 83.

Roberts, who may not be known well by younger fans, played for the Phillies from 1948-1961 and lead the Whiz Kids of 1950 to the Phillies first National League Pennant in 35 years.

From 1950-1955 Roberts had 20 wins each season, leading the National League in wins from 1952-1955.

Robin Roberts will always be engraved in the hearts of Phillies fans, and on the wall of Citizens Bank Park. His number, 36, sits over the Center Field wall and a statue of him outside the first base gate of Citizens Bank Park.

Robin Roberts Legacy:
In his 19-season career, Roberts compiled a 286-245 record with 2,357 strikeouts, a 3.41 ERA, 305 complete games, 45 shutouts, and 4,688⅔ innings pitched in 676 games. He holds the Major League records for home runs allowed by a pitcher (505) and for most consecutive Opening Day starts for the same team with 12, between 1950 and 1961.

Roberts was the only pitcher in major league history to defeat the Boston Braves, the Milwaukee Braves and the Atlanta Braves

Robin Roberts was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976

In 1999 he was listed as number 74 on the Sporting News 100 Greatest Baseball Players list, and was nominated for the Major League Baseball All Century Team.

Phillies announced that they will wear a #36 patch on their jerseys and hang Robin Roberts jersey in the dugout for the rest of the season.
