On April 25th, 1978 the Phillie Phanatic made his debut in Philadelphia and into the hearts of fans. He continues to be sports most beloved (and most sued) mascot. The 6 foot 5 inch 300 pound mascot from the Galapagos Islands leaves us always laughing and gets us excited to see the Phillies.
He continues to entertain us, whether it’s smashing the opposing team’s helmet, shooting hot dogs from his ATV, dancing on the Phillies dugout, etc.
This past Sunday we saw a classic out of the Phanatic that gets funnier every time, his Mother’s Day skit. The Phanatic always brings out his mom, Phoebe, sits her in a chair, dances to “I’ll Always Love My Mama”, gives her flowers, and tries to pull away in the ATV where Phoebe falls off the back only to be saved by her son. This skit is classic Phanatic and is scene every year during the Mother’s Day Game …. Which leads me to thinking, who is the Phanatic’s father?
In the 30+ years the Phanatic has been in existence in Philadelphia we never met Papa Phanatic. Could it have been a bad separation between Phoebe that caused the Phanatic not to talk to him? Could he have died at a young age? Could Phoebe and the Phanatic have just left him on the Galapagos Islands? Or is he one of those dad’s that wants to steal the Phanatic’s sunlight? We do not have an explanation for the missing Phanatic, mainly because the Phanatic does nothing for his dad on Father’s Day.
The question still remains, who is the Phanatic’s father? Maybe one day we will see Phoebe, the Phanatic, and Phoebe’s lovers on Maury one day seeing if one of her lovers are the father.
Or maybe my friend is telling me the truth. Maybe, just maybe, the Phanatic is his own dad like Jesus.
The case of the missing Phanatic continues …
