Carcillo Out
By Kevin K

Dan Carcillo has been suspended 2 games for his high stick in Sunday's win over the Devils.Carcillo's stick made contact with Devils' winger David Clarkson, cutting Clarkson near his right eye.

“I am disappointed in this decision by the league office,” said Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren. “This was clearly an accidental high stick, and I do not believe a match penalty (for intent to injure) was the call that was warranted.

His suspension will start Thursday at the Islanders as well as Friday vs the Canadiens.

Flyers Fall Victim to Injury Bug in Fifth Straight Loss
Reposted by Kevin K, Written By Phellow Phan Vince Zaleski

The Philadelphia Flyers fell victim to the injury bug again today against the Pittsburgh Penguins as well as the losing bug. The team is looking anything but one that is fighting for their playoff lives.

Twenty-eight-year-old goaltender, Johan Backlund, who was making his NHL debut today in Pittsburgh, did not come out for the start of the third period. Backlund apparently re-aggravated a recent injury to his groin. A cold Brian Boucher off the bench took over for Backlund in a close 2-1 game.

Backlund played well in the two periods allowing only two goals on 24 shots faced. He held his team withing range of the Atlantic Division leading Penguins, who were once again playing without sniper Evgeni Malkin (foot) and power-play quarterback Sergei Gonchar (illness). However, the defending Stanley Cup Champions were able to put two goals past Boucher to net the victory 4-1, thus, clinching a playoff spot.

With the loss, the Flyers are now tied for seventh in the Eastern Conference after the Boston Bruins’ 5-0 pounding today of the Calgary Flames, each have 80 points. The Atlanta Thrashers are just four points out of the eighth spot heading into their game tonight at Carolina with 76 points.

The loss was the fifth straight for the reeling Flyers, who were looking to bounce back from a devastating defeat at home on Thursday night at the hands of one of the NHL’s worst road teams, the Minnesota Wild. The Flyers blew a 3-1 third period lead in route to losing in overtime 4-3.

The loss prompted team leaders Chris Pronger and Kimmo Timonen to call a closed door team meeting without their coach Peter Laviolette.

“We win as a team and lose as a team," said Laviolette when asked about the play of Boucher after the loss to Minnesota on Thursday. "And the play of his team in the first four shifts of that third period were totally unacceptable.”

The play of Boucher must have been somewhat deflating however, because he was benched today in favor of Backlund in a huge road game.

It looks like Boucher (with Backlund out again) and the rest of the Flyers will have to try and pull together now as they skate at home tomorrow night in another huge contest against Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils. The Devils currently sit in the fourth spot overall in the Eastern Conference with 91 points, (just two behind the Atlantic Division leading Penguins) heading into tonight's road tilt with the Montreal Canadiens.

35 Years and Counting .....
By Kevin K

It has been 35 years since the Flyers last hoisted the Stanley Cup over their heads. The days of Bobby Clarke and Bernie Parent are now a distant memory, and unlike other Flyers I am sick of waiting.

I have heard the constant complaining on sports radio shows, most recently today on Mike Missanelli's show, of how Flyers fans are content in just competing and being in the playoffs every year. Screw that, its time to win. It is time to sign a big name player, someone who can lead us down ice and who the fans say, "wow with him on the ice we are going to score!". We don't have that any more in Philadelphia. We lost it. Jeff Carter did that for us last year, but has fallen off a bit. This is honestly getting ridiculous and I am sick of hearing Flyers fans say how great the team is. Yes they are competing but they aren't winning! Isn't winning what Philadelphia is all about?

In the city the Flyers have the second longest drought of a championship (Eagles now are 50 years) and it surprisingly hasn't gotten ugly. I am a Flyers fan, but I see the direction this team is going and it is not pretty.

If the Flyers really want to compete and go for a Stanley Cup they have to make moves this off season. They need a goalie number one. They are not going to win without a star goaltender, and the last time they really had one was Ron Hextall. My friend, Pat Hilferty said it best today, Evgeni Nabokov is that type of goalie.

I am really sad to say this because I love the guy, but the Flyers need to strip Mike Richards of the C and put it on Chris Pronger. Pronger has lead the Duck to two Stanley Cups and is a leader. It is time to do it.

Before you yell at me like I have no idea what I am talking about with other fans, think about it because it is true, I have audio proof of it. It is time for Flyers fans to demand more out of ownership and move this team into a Stanley Cup winning organization again.

Carter Out 3-4 Weeks
By Kevin K

I wanted to post this the other day but the website went down. Jeff Carter has a broken foot and will be out for the next 3-4 weeks. This is very scary for the Flyers, and now a disappointing season has become worse.

With Carter out that means that Gagne, Briere, and Hartnell (combined over 25 Million Dollars, less then 60 goals).

The Flyers also lost two goalies to injury this year, Emery (Abdomen) and Leighton (Ankle). They are limping into the playoffs, and will not do anything in it unless someone st

Flyers Can't Fly Without Wings
By Kevin K

The Philadelphia Flyers have a huge problem in the stretch run of the season, they have no goaltender. In the off season the Flyers signed Goalie Ray Emery thinking that he would be the answer to the Flyers troubles at the position, Emery has been out most of the season with an injured abdomen, and is now out for the season. Michael Leighton was signed off of waivers for the Flyers after he was released from Carolina. Leighton was very promising for the Flyers, until he recently went down with a high ankle sprain. Now the Flyers are going with their backup goalie, a goalie that has started for them in the past, Brian Boucher. Although Boosh has had his moments he is not the answer the Flyers need at that position.

I said it before the trade deadline that the Flyers had to make a move for a goalie, the Ducks traded two of their goalies, Joey McDonald and Jean Sebastian Giguire. The Flyers acquired no goalie at the deadline, and really did nothing to boost the teams chances of a playoff run.

The Flyers are in trouble and have been for a while now. They haven't had a great goalie on this team since Ron Hextall, and no one can tell me differently. The Flyers need an all-star goalie on this team, and they need it fast if they ever plan on making it back to the Stanely Cup.

Leighton goes down last night with a high ankle sprain, this is worrisome for all Flyers fans. Leighton has been standing on his head for the Flyers and has been such a great addition to this team.

We will keep you updated on whether he will come back or not

Flyers Fighting for the Playoffs
By Kevin K

The Flyers lost the other day to the Rangers leaves them in a tie for 6th in the conference with Montreal and 76 points. Both teams are currently behind the 5th place Ottawa Senators by 3 points, and have fallen behind the 4th place Devils by 9 points.

The Flyers have 14 games left in the regular season (including tonight's game @ the Predators). In order to make it past the first round the easiest, the Flyers must surpass the Ottawa Senators to get into 5th. That would set up a match up between the Flyers and Devils, in the past few years the Flyers have shown difficulty winning against the  Flyers, but Martin Brodeur seems to have lost a step and the Flyers have been able to defeat them this year. If they can get past the Devils and get their confidence up, they can be a force in the playoffs, but first they have to battle in these next 14 games.

Lets Go Flyers !

2.1 Seconds !
By Kevin K

The Philadelphia Flyers defeat the Chicago Blackhawks today, 3-2. The Blackhawks came into Philadelphia without winning a game here since 1996, and today was no different.

Scott Hartnell came to play today and scored the tying goal with 3 minutes to go in the hockey game, but it was Chris Pronger and the Flyers final drive in the last 10 seconds of the game that had Philadelphia going crazy. Pronger started a drive with 10 seconds to go, passed it up ice and the next time Pronger got the puck, it went in the net with 2.1 seconds left on the game clock ! Yes it was truly a sight to see. One of the most exciting games of the season by the Flyers.

Michael Leighton got his 12th straight start today and saved 39 of 41 shots. Leighton stood on his head today and had great defense in front of him today, something that was truly lacking against Boston the other night.

The Flyers remain 6th in the Eastern Conference, not only 3 points down from Ottawa.

Simon Gagne also scored for the Flyers early in the 3rd to give them a 1-0 lead.

Three star selections 1st:   MICHAEL LEIGHTON 2nd:   CHRIS PRONGER 3rd:   SCOTT HARTNELL
